Benin bronze “cats” are actually depictions of leopards, which are a symbol of the Oba (king) of the historic Kingdom of Benin (located in modern-day Nigeria).
Pairs of leopard statues often stood on either side of the Oba’s throne or were placed on royal ancestral altars.
These sculptures are made using the lost-wax casting method Contrary to the common term “Benin Bronzes,” they are technically made of brass, and a copper alloy.
